How to Clean Your Oven

Over time gunk can build up in your oven causing it to smoke affecting the taste and efficiency of your oven. Cleaning your oven can make cooking more enjoyable and is easier than you think. Here’s how to clean your oven.

How to Clean Your Oven

What You’ll Need:

  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Spray Bottle

How To:

  1. Remove the Oven Racks. Remove everything from the oven including the oven racks.
  2. Make the Cleaning Paste. Mix together 1/2 cup of baking Soda with 2 to 4 tablespoons of warm water in a bowl. Tweak the amount of water to get a spreadable paste.
  3. Apply the Cleaning Paste. Coat the interior of the oven with the paste. It’s a good idea to use rubber gloves to protect your hands—it’s a dirty job, and going gloveless can leave your hands irritated and covered in grime. As you spread the paste with a clean rag or pastry brush, stay clear of the heating elements to prevent any possible damage.
  4. Let Sit Overnight. Once you’ve completely coated the interior of the oven, let it sit for 12 hours or overnight. In the meantime, you can turn your attention to the overnight racks.
  5. Clean the Oven Racks. Plug up the sink or bathtub (if you sink isn’t big enough) and place the oven racks in. Sprinkle them with baking soda and pour vinegar on top, then fill the sink or tub with hot water until the racks are just covered. Let sit for at least 6 hours.
  6. Spray Vinegar Inside the Oven. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spray it all over the interior of the oven. White vinegar is an excellent cleaning agent. It will cause any residual baking soda paste to foam up and loosen completely.
  7. Wipe it All Out. Use a damp rag to wipe the oven clean. Any stuck on bits can be scraped away with a spatula or scraper.
  8. Replace the Oven Racks. Return the clean racks to the oven and let the interior of the oven dry completely. To speed up the process, turn the oven on for a few minutes.

How Often to Clean Your Oven

There is no right or wrong answer to how often you should clean your oven. The good thing about cleaning your oven regularly is that if you do, you will know it’s in good condition when you need to use it. Generally, you should clean your oven when you notice the smell of cooked food lingering after you’ve used your oven, or when you can visibly see grease and crumbs build up. It’s easy enough to use baking soda and vinegar, so this is a cheap way to make sure your oven is clean and working properly.

How to Keep Your Oven Clean

No one likes to clean their oven, so the best way to keep it clean is to not make a mess. Here are some tips on keeping your oven clean:

  • Get an oven liner. Lining the bottom of your oven with a non-stick liner can keep the crumbs and grease on the liner and off the oven. These liners can be cut to fit, cleaned in the dishwasher and found for cheap on amazon. Make your life easier and pick one of these up.
  • Clean as you go. Bits of food or grease can fall into your oven, and if left untouched will burn off the next time you use the oven. The left-on food will smoke and impart it’s odour into the sides of your oven and the food you cook with it. Make the process easier for yourself down the line and clean as you go. Pick out bits of fallen food, or just wipe up that little pool of grease before it gets baked into the oven and make your oven last much longer between deep cleans.
  • Don’t overfill your dishes. When you fill your casserole dishes right up to the top, it’s much more likely food is going to fall over the edge. Try to leave some space to breathe at the top, or find a pan with more suitable room. Additionally, a lid can be helpful if appropriate for the specific dish. Although, a lid can either speed up or slow down the cooking process so take this into account to your cooking time.
